Nursery achieves green flag for going green
Wise Owls Farm View Day Nursery in Reading has achieved their long-term aspiration of gaining Eco-Schools Green Flag accreditation after successfully completing the seven important steps in the Eco-Schools framework; a framework designed to empower and motivate young people to improve environmental awareness in their school, childcare setting, local community and beyond.
Some of the necessary steps to eco-schools status were undertaking an environmental review of the nursery, writing an action plan, informing and involving the nursery community and forming an Eco-Committee made up of children and adults responsible for driving environmental issues within the nursery.
Farm View Day Nursery took on the Eco-Schools challenge as a way to guide them on how to make a positive impact on the environment. Some of the steps the nursery has taken include using natural sustainable products whenever possible, as well as having an effective waste disposal system, reducing food waste and sourcing local produce.
Wise Owls Founder Tanya Gallitzine has been very passionate about the planet from a young age, “I used to go out with my father to collect rubbish in our local area and ever since I have been more conscious of the need for everyone to do things differently. I am always looking at ways we can contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable world. This started with changing the general waste to recycling and food bins; involving the children in this process so they learn to be responsible young citizens. As we continue to renovate our Farm View Day Nursery, we plan to install a bigger kitchen so that all meals have locally sourced produce that are as natural and packet-free as possible. I feel every step we take helps to educate our children, staff and parents and we value their contribution to this journey we are taking.”
Having completed the seven-step process, Farm View Day Nursery has been awarded Eco-Schools Green Flag accreditation, recognising, rewarding and celebrating the environmental achievements of the staff and young people in the day nursery.
